December Book Club and future books

Posted on 15. Nov, 2010 by Vox Sheffield in Blog, Book Club, Events, News

Hello All!

Thanks to those who came to Book Club last week. If you weren’t there, we missed you! We had a good chat about ‘The Tuppenny Hat Detective’. Definitely worth a read, particularly because of the historical picture it paints of life in post-war Sheffield.

December Book Club

We decided on the books for the next few months. Our December Book Club is on Wednesday 8th December (2nd wednesday in December as usual) 7.30-9pm at Crucible Corner and we’ll be chatting about ‘Sister’ by Rosamund Lupton. It’s a current Richard and Judy Book Club book and we chose it because it has a snowy scene on the front and it looked wintry! You can get it pretty reasonably for £3.49 via the Richard and Judy website if you click here or through amazon for £2.99 if you click here.

Future Books

Here are the books up until March, chosen by Book Club members last week. Get them on your Christmas list!

Wednesday 12th January
‘The Fingersmith’ by Sarah Waters

Wednesday 9th February
‘The Long Song’ by Andrea Levy

Wednesday 9th March
‘No & Me’ by Delphine de Vigan

Look forward to seeing people on 8th December!

September Book Club: Lucky Man by Michael J Fox

Posted on 20. Aug, 2010 by Vox Sheffield in Blog, Book Club, Events

From Rachel:

We met in August to chat about ‘A Picture of Dorian Gray’ by Oscar Wilde. Not quite as much of a page turner as The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo but lots to chat about.

For our September book club, as we’ve never done an autobiography, we’re reading ‘Lucky Man: A Memoir’ by Michael. J. Fox. The best way to get a copy cheaply is through the new and used books on Amazon. The link is here.

We meet on the second Wednesday of each month at Crucible Corner (opposite the Crucible) 7-8.30pm. The September date is Wednesday 8th September. If you’ve not been before, please feel free to drop in and see what you think.

Also, date for your diary – Book Club and the Monkey Butler Improv Comedy group who are also part of Vox Sheffield, are doing an event as part of the Off the Shelf festival in October. It will be a performance reading of a new book written ‘The Colour Papers’. This will take place on Saturday 23rd October, 7.30pm at Cafe Piazza near the Cathedral and will raise money for Book Aid International who send books for children to places including Sierra Leone. We really need help with planning, publicity etc. so if you fancy helping out, let me know and I’ll be arranging a planning get-together soon. We’ll also be reading this book for our October book club.

Hopefully see you for book club in September! Happy reading!

August Book Club: A Picture of Dorian Gray

Posted on 09. Aug, 2010 by Vox Sheffield in Blog, Book Club, Events

For our August book club we’re reading ‘A Picture of Dorian Gray’ by Oscar Wilde. Thought we’d go for a classic this month! If you need a copy, I still have some reading group library copies that we borrow on a book club library card. Let me know if you’d like one.

We meet on the second Wednesday of each month at Crucible Corner (opposite the Crucible) 7-8.30pm. The August date is Wednesday 11th August. If you’ve not been before, please feel free to drop in and see what you think.

Hopefully see you there! Happy reading!

July Book Club: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Posted on 16. Jun, 2010 by Vox Sheffield in Blog, Book Club, Events

Thanks to all of those who came to the June book club (‘What I Talk about when I talk about Running’). It was really interesting – mainly because most people hadn’t finished the book because it was too dull! Comments ranged from “I couldn’t keep reading because I was so bored i felt physically sick” to “It made me want to go out for a run” and “I resorted to marking all the parts that annoyed me the most” – brilliant! That’s what I love about book club!

So, lets try another one! We’ll be meeting on Wednesday 14th July, 7-8.30pm at Crucible Corner to chat about ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo‘ by Stieg Larsson. There aren’t any library copies so we’ll need to find it ourselves. We had some ideas for future books. If anyone has any suggestions, just email them to me.

I look forward to seeing you on 14th July! Happy reading!

Next Book Club (June 9th): What I Talk About When I Talk About Running

Posted on 17. May, 2010 by Vox Sheffield in Blog, Book Club, Events

The next Book Club is happening on Wednesday 9th June.

We’ll be discussing ‘What I Talk About When I Talk About Running‘ by Haruki Murakami.

We have 10 reading group copies from the library if you’d like to borrow one. Just email Rachel.

They’ll be more information up shortly about the venue, we meet at 7pm though.

Next Book Club (May 12th): Killing the Beasts

Posted on 14. Apr, 2010 by Vox Sheffield in Blog, Book Club, Events

From Rachel:

Here’s the latest about next month’s book club.

The plan is to read “Killing the Beasts” by Chris Simms who is doing a ‘meet the author’ event at the Central Library on Wednesday 12th May 6pm-7.30pm. We thought those of us who can make it can go to the event (£2 including refreshments) and meet to chat afterwards at the Crucible Corner just after 7.30pm (Bar opposite the Crucible – think that’s what it’s called – used to be Ruskins!).

To get a copy of the book, it is stocked in Waterstones or you can search for a used copy on Amazon for not much money. Click here to go to the Amazon page. It’s a crime thriller and reviews say it’s a page-turner!

I’ll be going to the Central library tomorrow afternoon to get tickets. If you haven’t already let me know that you want one, email me by tomorrow afternoon and I’ll get you one. Alternatively call the Central Library on 0114 2734727.

If you want to come but haven’t been before, let me know and I can arrange to meet you beforehand. I’m excited about our evening out and we’ve got time to think of amazing questions to ask the author! Email me with any questions/suggestions.

Book Club is next Wednesday!

Posted on 31. Mar, 2010 by Vox Sheffield in Blog, Book Club, Events

From Rachel:

Hi everyone!

April’s book club is next Wednesday (7th April)! We’ll be meeting at the Lounge Bar on West Street (which is a change of venue from our usual place – we’ll see how it goes!). We’ll be chatting about ‘The Secret Life of Bees’ by Sue Monk Kidd. We start at 7pm and are usually finished by 8.30pm.

For our May book we thought we’d match it to Central Library’s ‘Meet the Author’ event with Chris Simms. His book is called ‘Outside the White Lines’ and is a crime novel. He was named by Waterstones as one of their “25 Authors for the Future”. The book is available on Amazon from various sellers from £2.75. The Meet the Author event is on Wednesday 12th May 6-7.30pm and we can do book club the Wednesday before or the same night meeting afterwards? What do people think?

Feel free to email me with any questions or ideas. Hopefully see most of you next Wednesday at the Lounge Bar,

Rachel

Next Book Club: April 7th

Posted on 09. Mar, 2010 by Vox Sheffield in Blog, Book Club, Events

The next Book Club is happening on Wednesday April 7th.

We’re going to be discussing ‘The Secret Life of Bees’ by Sue Monk Kidd.

We still don’t yet have a permanent venue for the Book Club so, unless you hear otherwise, assume that it will be meeting at 7pm at the Devonshire Cat.

Upcoming Book Club events

Posted on 08. Feb, 2010 by Vox Sheffield in Blog, Book Club, Events

From Rachel:

Hello!

It was great to see those of you who could make it last time. If you still have a copy of ‘A Long Way Down’ by Nick Hornby (or Suite Francaise) can you get in touch to get it back to me asap?

Next Book Club

The next book club will be Wednesday March 3rd, 7-8.30pm. Venue to be confirmer. Assume it’s the Devonshire Cat. We’re waiting to hear back from the Blue Moon Cafe and are still hunting for other venues! We’ll be chatting about ‘Small Island’ by Andrea Levy. It’s a fat one so we’ve left time to get it read! If you need a copy, email me back and I’ll get a library copy to you.

Library Author Event – 15th February CANCELLED

There are a couple of events coming up at the Central Library. The first is an evening with a Mills and Boon author who will share the 12 steps to writing romance! It’s Monday 15th February 6-7.30pm at the Central Library. We thought as many as possible of us could go and then go for food afterwards nearby. If you’d like to come, call the Central Library for tickets on 0114 2734727. They are £2. For further details click here. We should really read a Mills and Boon by then! Hopefully it’ll be something fun and a bit different.

There is another ‘Meet the author’ event at the library on 10th March. If you want any further information about this, click here.

I think that’s it! Get in touch if you need any info on anything! And let me know if you’re coming on 15th February,

Rachel

Next Book Club: Wednesday 3rd March

Posted on 27. Jan, 2010 by Vox Sheffield in Blog, Book Club, Events

With the January book club being postponed by a week due to the weather, there won’t be a book club in February.

Instead, the next book club is happening on Wednesday 3rd March.

The book that we’re reading is called Small Island by Andrea Levy. Get in touch with Rachel to get a library copy if you need one.

Hopefully we’ll have a proper venue sorted for this one too!
