Next Book Club (May 12th): Killing the Beasts

Posted on 14. Apr, 2010 by Vox Sheffield in Blog, Book Club, Events

From Rachel:

Here’s the latest about next month’s book club.

The plan is to read “Killing the Beasts” by Chris Simms who is doing a ‘meet the author’ event at the Central Library on Wednesday 12th May 6pm-7.30pm. We thought those of us who can make it can go to the event (£2 including refreshments) and meet to chat afterwards at the Crucible Corner just after 7.30pm (Bar opposite the Crucible – think that’s what it’s called – used to be Ruskins!).

To get a copy of the book, it is stocked in Waterstones or you can search for a used copy on Amazon for not much money. Click here to go to the Amazon page. It’s a crime thriller and reviews say it’s a page-turner!

I’ll be going to the Central library tomorrow afternoon to get tickets. If you haven’t already let me know that you want one, email me by tomorrow afternoon and I’ll get you one. Alternatively call the Central Library on 0114 2734727.

If you want to come but haven’t been before, let me know and I can arrange to meet you beforehand. I’m excited about our evening out and we’ve got time to think of amazing questions to ask the author! Email me with any questions/suggestions.

Book Club is next Wednesday!

Posted on 31. Mar, 2010 by Vox Sheffield in Blog, Book Club, Events

From Rachel:

Hi everyone!

April’s book club is next Wednesday (7th April)! We’ll be meeting at the Lounge Bar on West Street (which is a change of venue from our usual place – we’ll see how it goes!). We’ll be chatting about ‘The Secret Life of Bees’ by Sue Monk Kidd. We start at 7pm and are usually finished by 8.30pm.

For our May book we thought we’d match it to Central Library’s ‘Meet the Author’ event with Chris Simms. His book is called ‘Outside the White Lines’ and is a crime novel. He was named by Waterstones as one of their “25 Authors for the Future”. The book is available on Amazon from various sellers from £2.75. The Meet the Author event is on Wednesday 12th May 6-7.30pm and we can do book club the Wednesday before or the same night meeting afterwards? What do people think?

Feel free to email me with any questions or ideas. Hopefully see most of you next Wednesday at the Lounge Bar,

Rachel

Vox returns for March with a stellar line up of music and spoken word

Posted on 11. Mar, 2010 by Vox Sheffield in Blog, Events, Vox Night

We’re really proud to be welcoming CARL WOODFORD – one of the leading lights of Sheffield’s folk / acoustic scene Carl is both a wonderful guitarist and singer. Influenced by the likes of Nick Drake and John Martyn, Carl’s songs have an epic quality setting him apart from his contemporaries.

“A true talent” – The Link magazine
“A great musician” – BBC Radio York

Have a listen here: http://www.myspace.com/carlwoodford

Making a welcome return to Vox we also have CAPTIVES ON THE CAROUSEL, featuring the twin talents of Sarah Morrey singing and Ben Eckersley on cello. With brand new material and exciting new loop pedal experiments, this is a good time to see them.

Have a listen here: http://www.myspace.com/captivesonthecarousel

We’ll also be featuring poetry and spoken word acts hosted by the inimitable Ollie Francis; and art will be exhibited by Isabelle Taylor and Laura Francis. Watch this space for announcements.

The next Book Club is happening on Wednesday April 7th.

We’re going to be discussing ‘The Secret Life of Bees’ by Sue Monk Kidd.

We still don’t yet have a permanent venue for the Book Club so, unless you hear otherwise, assume that it will be meeting at 7pm at the Devonshire Cat.

Vox Night Comedy Special

Posted on 19. Feb, 2010 by Vox Sheffield in Blog, Events, Vox Night

The Vox Night Comedy Special is almost upon us…

Join us at the Riverside on Sunday 28th February (5-8pm) for some midwinter cheer and the end of February blues.

We’re delighted to be welcoming Simon Snorkel And The Gameboys – Sheffield’s premier folk-rap band, and quite possibly the funniest people in this city. Their exuberant performances have to be seen to be believed, but in the meantime, hear some tracks here:

Also performing will be RYAN O of The Mighty Spectacles. He’s already impressed at Vox before, and is promising brand new material especially for the night. We’re also delighted to welcome back our friends from MONKEY BUTLER, Sheffield’s newest comedy improv group. Who knows what they’ll be doing (they’ll be making it up on the night), but it’s guaranteed to be good.

There’s more tbc, so keep checking back, and see you on the 28th. Remember, it’s free.

RSVP to the event on Facebook.

Upcoming Book Club events

Posted on 08. Feb, 2010 by Vox Sheffield in Blog, Book Club, Events

From Rachel:

Hello!

It was great to see those of you who could make it last time. If you still have a copy of ‘A Long Way Down’ by Nick Hornby (or Suite Francaise) can you get in touch to get it back to me asap?

Next Book Club

The next book club will be Wednesday March 3rd, 7-8.30pm. Venue to be confirmer. Assume it’s the Devonshire Cat. We’re waiting to hear back from the Blue Moon Cafe and are still hunting for other venues! We’ll be chatting about ‘Small Island’ by Andrea Levy. It’s a fat one so we’ve left time to get it read! If you need a copy, email me back and I’ll get a library copy to you.

Library Author Event – 15th February CANCELLED

There are a couple of events coming up at the Central Library. The first is an evening with a Mills and Boon author who will share the 12 steps to writing romance! It’s Monday 15th February 6-7.30pm at the Central Library. We thought as many as possible of us could go and then go for food afterwards nearby. If you’d like to come, call the Central Library for tickets on 0114 2734727. They are £2. For further details click here. We should really read a Mills and Boon by then! Hopefully it’ll be something fun and a bit different.

There is another ‘Meet the author’ event at the library on 10th March. If you want any further information about this, click here.

I think that’s it! Get in touch if you need any info on anything! And let me know if you’re coming on 15th February,

Rachel

Instead, the next book club is happening on Wednesday 3rd March.
